Tracy Ross won the highest honor in magazine writing for her feature essay in Backpacker magazine, which she later turned into a best-selling memoir. She has traveled the world bringing stories of adventure and humanity to readers in the pages of Outside, Backpacker, Bicycling, Ski and other titles. She recently completed a feature about the disappearance of Aubrey Sacco in Nepal. She is currently the editor at Mountain magazine. tracyross.net

Adventure journalist Jayme Moye has written hundreds of stories for more than 50 publishers including National Geographic, Travel + Leisure, New York, Outside, Runner’s World and Men’s Journal. In 2014, Jayme was named North American Travel Journalist Association’s Travel Writer of the Year. Her writing has been anthologized in The Best Women’s Travel Writing and Vignettes and Postcards From Paris. She is currently co-writing, On the Nose, A Lifelong Obsession with Yosemite’s Most Iconic Big Wall Climb. jaymemoye.com

 

gvd_GEOFF VAN DYKE / 5280 MAGAZINE / EDITORIAL DIRECTOR

Geoff Van Dyke joined the staff of 5280 in 2007 after three years of full-time freelance writing and editing. From 2009 through 2014 he helped lead 5280 to a total of 48 City and Regional Magazine Association award nominations, including multiple nods in General Excellence, and in 2014, 5280 won its first ever award in CRMA’s Excellence in Writing category. Van Dyke has edited stories by 5280 staffers that have been anthologized in Best American Sports Writing, Best American Crime Reporting, and Best Food Writing, and he was the editor of “Low On O2,” which was a finalist for a 2010 National Magazine Award in the personal service category. His own writing has appeared in national publications including Men’s Journal, Men’s Health, Outside, Bicycling, and the New York Times. Before his stint as a freelancer, Van Dyke was an editor at Men’s Journal.

Michelle Theall started her career in publishing twenty-two years ago and is currently the editor in chief of Alaska Magazine. She has appeared on NBC Today, MSNBC, The Travel Channel, and the Fox Sports Network. The author of two health books, Theall’s syndicated health and fitness column ran with McClatchy Tribune for several years, and she garnered two prestigious Folio Awards for her work with Women’s Adventure magazine (a title she created in 2003 and sold in 2008). More recently, Theall won two awards of excellence from the North American Travel Journalists’ Association for her feature and editorial writing. And her feature essay, All That’s Left is God, earned a 2011 GLAAD Media Award nomination.

Sadie Quarrier is a senior photo editor at National Geographic Magazine where she is in charge of adventure and exploration stories in addition to editing a diverse range of other topics. Sadie has been an editor at the magazine for 13 years. Prior to that she was a photo editor for National Geographic Books and photo editor/designer at Smithsonian Magazine. She is also currently a voting member on the National Geographic Society’s Expeditions Council and Young Explorer’s Grant Committee, both of which fund a variety of media-driven projects.

 

BobSmithb-196x300BOB SMITH: PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHER

Bob Smith creates fine wildlife portraits, environmental, and landscape images. He travels extensively throughout the year, conducting both wildlife field photo workshops and classroom sessions on digital workflow. His work covers locations in Antarctica, Africa, Alaska, Canada, and the western U.S. His images have appeared in publications including the National Geographic, Nikon product catalog, Evergreen Living, Nature Photographer, Conservation Society, and numerous other publications. Bob is a member of National Geographic’s Image Collection, Nikon Professional Services and was Director of Mangelsen Stock Images. He has published two books: “Alaska to the Arctic” and “Antarctica – Land of Ice.”  bobsmithimages.net

Michelle brings over twenty-two years of publishing experience to the conference and has held photo editing responsibilities for Alaska magazine and Women’s Adventure in her career. As the editor in chief at Alaska magazine, Michelle oversees, manages and approves the photography, design, and articles for the title. Her images have appeared in several national titles including Backpacker, Alaska, 5280, Women’s Adventure and Elevation Outdoors. CONTESTS

All attendees may submit up to three images for review by our faculty. Ten attendees will be selected to receive a one-on-one, ten-minute meeting with National Geographic’s senior photo editor, Sadie Quarrier, at the conference.

All submissions will be considered for a special Outdoor Photographer award for the best singular image in the competition. Winner will receive a one-year subscription to the title.

All paid and registered attendees will receive submission guidelines from the Creative Conferences. Meeting assignments, including those with National Geographic, will be announced the week prior to the conference.
