So much of Alaska to see in a single trip! Winter in Alaska delivers. On this trip we see hundreds to thousands of bald eagles, moose, Mendenhall Glacier, the northern lights, the Inside Passage, and possibly other wildlife, all with the icy and snowy backdrop of the majestic Cathedral Peaks. Photographers love “moody” weather and we typically get snow, ice, fog, and hoarfrost all in one day.

Join Michelle Theall, the executive editor and photographer for Alaska Magazine, in the Bald Eagle Preserve in Haines for the annual migration of thousands of bald eagles. This winter excursion promises tons of avian action in all weather conditions as the eagles descend to feed on the last salmon run of the season, unique to this area of Alaska.

Itinerary:

Day 1: Arrive in Juneau and taxi to check into our hotel downtown. Hotel is included. Depending on your arrival, explore Juneau on your own or rest up for tomorrow.

Day 2: We’ll meet for breakfast as a group before driving out to Mendenhall Glacier to explore and photograph the icy lake and Nugget Falls. Other stops might include St. Therese, Alaska State Museum, the harbor, and the Alaska Heritage Center. We’ll check the aurora forecast that night for opportunities to photograph the northern lights.

Day 3: We’ll catch the morning ferry from Juneau to Haines, enjoying a spectacularly scenic 4-hour cruise through the Inside Passage, including views of Eldred Rock Lighthouse, glaciers, and possible marine life. We’ll disembark around noon, check into our hotel in downtown Haines, grab lunch, and make our first foray into the preserve for an afternoon shoot. Happy hour at Haines Brewery. Dinner that evening as a group.

Days 4-6: We’ll spend every morning and afternoon in the preserve, from sunrise to sunset, photographing eagles, moose, bears, trumpeter swans, and anything else we find along the way. We’ll have lunch catered while in the preserve to maximize our time with the flora and fauna. In the preserve, bald eagles fight, fish, soar, and perch in unparalleled numbers. On one of those days, we’ll possibly attend a specially arranged private showing at the Kroschel Wildlife Preserve to meet and photograph orphaned moose, lynx, wolf, wolverine, ermine, and snowy owl in a natural setting.

In the evenings we’ll gather for dinner and talk about images and shooting challenges we encountered. Individual time will be allocated for one-on-one help with photography or post-processing questions. Each night we’ll look for northern lights based on the aurora forecast and clear skies. Instruction will be given prior to our first night regarding how to shoot the aurora.

Day 7: We’ll enjoy a few last hours in the preserve and depart the afternoon ferry for the return ride up the Inside Passage to Juneau. We’ll have dinner on the ferry, arriving around 8pm to check into our hotel in Juneau.

Day 8: Depart for home at your leisure.
